Perspective lurch

I was reading a news link from the Washington Post, "Many New or Expectant Mothers Die Violent Deaths". Apparently the leading cause of pregnant women dying is homicide... What really stuck was this quote though:

At any age, "pregnancy is a huge, life-altering event for both the male and the female," said Pat Brown, a criminal profiler based in Minneapolis. "It is certainly a more dangerous moment in life. You are escalating people's responsibilities and curtailing their freedoms."

For some men, she said, the situation boils down to one set of unadorned facts: "If the woman doesn't want the baby, she can get an abortion. If the guy doesn't want it, he can't do a damn thing about it. He is stuck with a child for the rest of his life, he is stuck with child support for the rest of his life, and he's stuck with that woman for the rest of his life. If she goes away, the problem goes away.

"If she goes away, the problem goes away"... right. How I wish the animal brain that fed that line to the conciousness would also feed a couple of thoughts about the probable consequences. "Hmm. I could be paying child support for the rest of my life (unless I leave the state or don't report my income) or I could spend the last 18 years of my life on death row..." But then we always believe that we're special, and we'll win the gamble. If 'we' didn't, then hey, we probably wouldn't have had unprotected sex in the first place...
