The whole home birth thing was pretty interesting. And since you aren't really supposed to go to the hospital until you are 4cm dilated anyway, the whole pain thing doesn't seem like much of a reason not to do it. Sure, it gets some worse, but the natural endorphins and amnesiotics your body makes really work pretty well. It hasn't even been 24 hours since it was over and I've already forgotten how I wasn't sure I was going to survive. :-D The being able to climb into your own bed after 48 hours of contraction caused sleep deprivation, (I learned that I am perfectly capable of sleeping for 5 minutes between contractions spaced every 7 minutes though,) is great, even if you were just sutured up on that same bed an hour before.

Congratulations!!!

Strangely enough, I had a dream about you guys last night. It involved you, Jesse and your daughter, who was either three or six years old (I'm not sure which, and I've no idea how she grew up that fast!!). She had really long blonde hair like you do. In the dream we were all going on a trip on a train to somewhere. I don't know (don't remember?) where but we were looking forward to it. I don't remember what the trip was but on the way back we caught a ride in someone's car.

Not a very exciting dream, but it was a good (cheerful) one and I'm really surprised that you guys showed up in my dream.

Best wishes to all three of you!!

Congratulations!!!!! She looks like a perfect little angel. :)

Wow. I hadn't realized you guys were doing a home birth. I don't know how to express how impressed I am by that.

I'm curious, how much "medicine" (pain relievers, antiseptics, needles, thread, etc...) did you end up using? (And who did the suturing?)

Wow.

Congratulations to the happy family! :)

I don't think there was anything that would qualify as medicine before the birth. There was medical technology, a doppler wand that lets you listen to the baby's heart beat every once in a while to monitor fetal stress, the same one the midwife uses in your prenatal checkups, and also a fetal monitor which is basically the same thing hooked up to a printer that lets them visually monitor the heart beat across a contraction, that only got used a couple times.

Then there were the cord clamps and scissors of course.

After the delivery I had some problems delivering the placenta, which needs to happen within a certain time or the cervix will have constricted too far to let it through, so they gave me a small shot of pitocin which stimulates contractions. And I have to say, being asked to cough to stimulate contractions after labor, when your abdominal muscles are about as useful as a pile of spaghetti is not fun.

Everything else was sewing me up afterwards, for which they did use lidocaine, a local anesthetic. I think I needed about 12 sutures, by the midwife. The sutures required what you'd imagine I guess, I was pretty sleep deprived by that point.

Wow!! What a beautiful baby!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Prayers for you, your husband and family!!

A good friend and his wife (also Rebecca) are expecting their first in Sept.(a boy already named Jackson)They too are planning a home birth. Seeing how well yours went it is a lot of assurance to tell my friends who are now starting to get the baby "jitters".

Many warm thoughts!!!
