First Steps

Monday night Rebecca was being a hyper little active creature, (stand up! sit down!)*N, (up the step! down the step!)*N, and we were discussing what exactly constituted a first step, stumbling on the way from standing to hands and knees? No... and how things like first steps seem to grow out of a continuum of action. I think it is hard to mark some point and call it the 'first' of something, when it is only marginally different from the actions that came before it. Rebecca then proceded to conclusively demonstrate what a first step was, by standing in front of her father then marching in place and stepping on his foot. Probably because he wasn't paying enough attention to her. (-_^) If walking follows in the, um, footsteps, of her other developmental tasks, it will be another month before she takes another step.

Baby's 1st
I think probably a lot of "baby's first" whatever is really the 3rd or 12th or 20th of that thing, but it's the first one the busy parents NOTICED.

You guys pay pretty close attention to Rebecca, so see the continuum more than many parents. I think many, loving parents though they may be, get exhausted by baby and just want to sit & read or whatever, then they look up and she's walking, and they exclaim "baby's first step!"

You probably nailed the actual 1st "first step" -- go you! :)

Oh yeah -- attention is good, but a little ignoring is good, too. You know this, I just like to repeat it.

Re: Baby's 1st
Oh, Rebecca gets her share of ignoring. Like last week, I was ignoring her while digging my vegetable bed, and turned around to find her in the middle of a patch of mushrooms. Erk.
