Stop the Spray

I don't know who's right, but I figure it can't hurt to have more people know that there are plans to have arial pheromone sprayings of the entire bay area to control the recent 'light brown apple moth' infestation this summer. You can read the 'against' position here at stopthespray.org. There is a petition, and there is going to be a vote in the Assembly Committee on Agriculture this wednesday, so if you would like to not be sprayed, now would be the time to go sign the petition. There's a lot of retoric about this, and how untested it is, and whether it would do any good anyway, but frankly I'm having a hard time getting worked up over it. It doesn't seem like a good idea, but will it actually be worse for my health than getting stuck at a red light behind a smelly diesel truck?

Yes it will be worse than getting stuck behind a diesal truck, because it will be in your environment ALL THE TIME. The plastic microcapsules are design to degrade over 30 to 90 days, meaning that it's always around you. You can't get away from it, like you can get away from the diesel truck. AND this will go on for YEARS because it takes years to eradicate a pest with this method. Please do your research!

Re: Yes!
I can't get away from the diesel truck when I'm stuck at a red light. And I'm talking about toxicity*exposure time. Diesel combustion side effects are really nasty. And really, to get worked up about the amount of plastic they are using? I go to the playground several times a week with my daughter. All the kids are digging with plastic shovels, every time they stick one of those shovels into the sand they get abraded. The result? A constantly renewed supply of fine plastic particles in the dusty air of the playground. Also silica dust from the sand? That's toxic too. There is so much abraded plastic all around us from so much stupid plastic crap that I don't think another three ounces an acre of mostly water with some plastic is even going to register on my personal environmental load. You think the air we're breathing right now is clean? I live in the bay area. The air here is horrible. More stuff in the air is worse, sure, I signed the petition several months ago, but I'm not going to get worked up about it.

I did my research. I even read the summary of symptoms report by OEHHA. I still don't think it's worth getting worked up over.

That's nice, one less thing for me to be a hypochondriac about. d(^.^)d (thumbs up! I just learned that from Densha Otoko tonight, isn't it cute? Or maybe it was 'b's...)
