Whole Lotta Art Goin' On

Rebecca and I have been crafting a lot recently. Wednesday we started a small art playgroup with Ellie and Anya. I ordered five gallons of paint with that as an excuse, it should be here next week. Yes... one gallon each of red, yellow, blue, white and black washable tempra paint. We'll see if we get through it before it goes bad, if paint can even go bad. I was just using some old craft paint from high school, so I guess not.

Then this morning we spent over an hour playing with some homemade air dry clay, I didn't know you could make clay out of cornstarch and baking soda, but boy does it come out *white*. It's from my current favorite book, Better Basics for the Home. We'll see how strong the clay is after it dries for a couple days though, I suspect it'll be a bit brittle and crumbly. In any case it'll be fun to paint with watercolors, since it is so white.

I've occassionally seen tempera paint go bad (i.e. turned to a rather strange cottage-cheesy consistency), but it takes a long time. There's tempera paint at camp that's been there (with no climate control) for a few years and it's still good.

I bet we can get through it in a couple years. As long as I have enough messy art parties. Obviously I need to build an enclosed cylinder that you can cover with paper and stick a toddler in the middle of with a gallon of paint to fling around. That'd use it up pretty quickly...

Perhaps a slip-n-slide with gobs of paint instead of a hose. That could be fun.

oooooooooooooooh! Put some paper at the end to catch the tumbling kids, and I'm sure we could get it into a conceptual art gallery. My CMU professor would'a eaten it up.
