I just made a livejournal account for my mom, lilybah, I have no idea if she'll use it regularly, but it'll be fun if she does. Does anyone else have parent types on livejournal? Do they have friends? Given that all my lj friends are folks I knew at CMU, I'm not sure that anyone from my mom's generation can really create that easy kind of connected community. At least I don't think any of her friends are really 'connected'. Do folks have non-geek parents who consider the internet an essential part of their communication network? To talk to someone other than their kids? I'm sure they exist, but how common is it in the boomer generation? I guess all my uncles are pretty connected, they're also pretty geeky. None of my aunts are really connected. Well, they have email, but often as not, on our family blog one of their husbands passes messages from them, because well, they just aren't that way. They like flowers, and telephone conversations... they use computers but they aren't in their blood I guess. Eh, I'm just rambling now.

Well, my mom got addicted to the internet when I was home for the summer during college. I introduced her to the web, and she's never been the same since.
I think she was the first on the block to get online, but her neighbor friends soon got on too. They mostly just forward each other dirty jokes and send online greeting cards. My mom has a huge address book to whom she sends all this crap (including me). She does send email to keep up with quite a number of her old friends from the navy and whatnot. They don't blog, though.

I wouldn't consider my mom a geek, per se. She is technologically inclined, though. When I was little, she made a hobby of disassembling broken radios and taking the working parts and making a new, working radio (usually held together with a rubber band).

Is that what you were looking for? ;)

oh yeah. I don't really consider my mom to be a baby boomer because she wasn't born in the US.

Well, possibly. Forget the dirty jokes and greeting cards though...more into boats and boating, aircraft carriers like the Midway, scientific american mag., adventure, psychology, astrophysics (not the heavy end), F-14's and Phantoms, history, friends.

I was blown away by your fast response...thanks!
